In southern Hanoi, a vast new sporting landmark is beginning to rise above the construction site. Nine months after work started, the arena first known as Trong Dong Stadium and now branded VinFast Stadium has reached a visible new stage, with towers standing as high as 80 metres despite difficult weather during August.
The planned capacity is 135,000, a figure that would make the Vietnamese venue the largest stadium in the world by a considerable margin. The current record is held by Pyongyang’s Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in North Korea, which is listed at 114,000 seats.
A Vietnamese symbol on a record scale
VinFast Stadium is being developed within the Hung Vuong International Sports Complex, a major project in the southern part of the Vietnamese capital. Vingroup, the multi-sector conglomerate active in technology, industry, property and services, is leading the development.
Its design is intended to carry a distinctly Vietnamese identity. A gold-coloured dome will take the form of a trong dong, the bronze drum that holds an important place in the country’s cultural heritage. The newest construction images also show the outline of the venue’s four stands taking shape beneath the future roofline.
Construction began in December, and the target is now to complete the concrete structure by the end of 2026. Full delivery is currently scheduled for July 2027, bringing the timetable forward from the original August 2028 completion date.
For Hanoi, the scale of the project places the city in a wider continental conversation about stadium ambition: not simply a new ground, but a venue conceived to exceed every existing arena in world football in terms of capacity.
