Werder Bremen Regional Alliance boosts stake with fresh investor

Werder Bremen’s Regional Alliance has raised its holding in the club’s professional football company to 19.71 percent. Entrepreneur Moritz Gausepohl has joined the group, bringing fresh funds and another regional investor into the Bundesliga side’s minority-shareholder structure.

Werder Bremen receive new Regional Alliance investment

The Regional Alliance has held shares in SV Werder Bremen GmbH & Co KG aA since 2024. Its stake first moved from 18 percent to 19.39 percent and has now increased again to 19.71 percent.

Quick facts

  • Werder’s Regional Alliance is a minority shareholder in the professional football operation.
  • The alliance’s shareholding has risen from 18 percent to 19.39 percent, then to 19.71 percent.
  • Moritz Gausepohl is the new entrepreneur joining the investor group.
  • Werder cited a structural deficit during the most recent transfer window.
  • Players sold included Backhaus, Schmid and Coulibaly.

Hubertus Hess-Grunewald, Werder’s outgoing president, described the expanded commitment as an important sign of support from the regional business community. He said dependable, strategic partners mattered in a difficult period for the club.

He added that Gausepohl accepted the standards set by the presidency and shared Werder’s values. The investor group is intended to keep ownership rooted in the club’s regional network.

Jens Christophers, spokesman for the Regional Alliance, said Gausepohl’s decision showed that identification with Werder remained strong among businesses close to the club. He also pointed to the group’s second stake increase as evidence of a united, long-term approach.

The additional capital comes after a restrained transfer window in Bremen. Despite the departures of Backhaus, Schmid and Coulibaly, Werder were able to reinvest only a fraction of their income from sales because of what the club called a structural deficit.

That leaves sporting director Clemens Fritz and his department with more financial room. The precise size of the new investment was not disclosed.

Gausepohl said Werder represented more than football to him, linking the club with home, tradition, solidarity and closeness to its supporters. He said the Weserstadion reflected those qualities and that he wanted to help secure sporting success alongside sound finances.
