Colson Montgomery took a 95.1 mph sinker off the left wrist Wednesday afternoon and could not continue at the plate, leaving the White Sox during a 6-3 loss to the Guardians in Cleveland.
The Chicago third baseman was hit in the fourth inning by Cleveland starter Parker Messick, with the pitch landing just above Montgomery’s wrist joint. Montgomery, a left-handed hitter, received attention from the training staff as play paused, then ran to first base.
The result
Montgomery stayed in the game long enough to take his position at third base in the bottom of the fourth. He was replaced before Cleveland came up in the fifth, however, after the wrist prevented him from taking another swing.
“We told him to go ahead and run the bases,” White Sox manager Will Venable said. “Once we got through defense, he wasn’t able to swing, so we made the change.”
X-rays performed at the ballpark did not reveal a fracture. Montgomery is considered day to day.
He finished 0-for-1 and saw his current skid reach 10 games. Over that stretch, the 24-year-old is batting .033, with one hit in 30 at-bats and 18 strikeouts.
