Madrid’s latest league win carried a private weight for Yan Diomande. The Ivory Coast international scored the only goal as Real Madrid beat Villarreal 1-0, then stepped away from the celebrations in tears to honour his late sister, Roxane.
A first Real Madrid goal with a personal meaning
- Diomande found the decisive moment in the 62nd minute against Villarreal, meeting Federico Valverde’s pass with a low, angled finish.
- The goal was briefly subject to a VAR review before being allowed to stand, giving the former Leipzig player his first LaLiga goal since joining Madrid.
- Once the decision had been confirmed, Diomande moved away from his teammates and broke down in tears.
- He dedicated the goal to Roxane, saying: “It means more than words can explain. My first goal is for you, sister. You will always be in my heart.”
Remembering Roxane
Roxane Diomande died in 2025, aged 15, after an unexpected poisoning at a party in Abidjan, the Ivorian city from which the siblings came. She was three years younger than Yan, who was 18 when he lost her.
Her role in his life extended beyond their family bond. Roxane had acted as Yan’s representative from the time he turned 10, a symbolic responsibility that reflected their closeness.
Diomande has carried that loss through a rapid rise that has included his Real Madrid move and representing Ivory Coast at the 2026 World Cup. Before the tournament, he wrote about his sister in a letter for The Player’s Tribute.
He recalled a childhood in which the pair did not think in terms of wealth or poverty, only happiness. But the letter also revealed the depth of his grief: “Since you died, I have felt empty,” he wrote, adding that everything he does on the pitch is for her.
At the Santiago Bernabeu, a narrow victory over Villarreal became another chapter in that promise.
