Seville’s early-season rhythm has found an unexpected anchor in Youssouf Fofana, the French midfielder whose goal against Barcelona gave Sevilla FC the lead in their final league fixture before the international break. At 27, Fofana has needed only four appearances in the white shirt to become a central figure for Luis García Plaza.
His arrival in Nervión came from a late opening in the market. Milan had been close to sending the player to Olympique de Marseille, but the French club could not complete the necessary departure of one of its own players and was therefore unable to register him. Sevilla moved quickly when the deal collapsed, securing Fofana on loan from Milan until 30 June.
The arrangement is especially favourable for the Andalusian club, which is covering only a small share of the midfielder’s substantial wages. That has delivered García Plaza an experienced addition without placing a heavy burden on Sevilla’s finances, while Fofana’s immediate impact has strengthened his standing in the squad.
His recent form has also drawn attention beyond Spain. Manchester United are among the major European clubs following his situation with a possible winter move in mind, although extracting him from Sevilla would be difficult. The existing loan agreement with Milan runs through the end of June, and Sevilla have little reason to contemplate losing a player who has rapidly become so important.
Fofana arrives with considerable international pedigree as well. He has played 25 times for France and scored three goals for his country, experience that has shown quickly in a Sevilla side seeking stability and authority in the middle of the pitch.
