Al Khaleej vs Al Fayha to Go Ahead Amid Saudi Security Fears

Saudi Arabia’s domestic programme is set to continue under a tense security backdrop, with Al Khaleej’s meeting with Al Fayha becoming one of the few fixtures still scheduled after matches involving Al Nassr, Al Ahli and Al Hilal were called off.

A league programme disrupted but not halted

  1. Saudi football entered another uncertain week following the attack in Riyadh earlier in the week, while the conflict involving the Houthis continued to affect the wider region.
  2. Al Nassr, Al Ahli and Al Hilal had their games cancelled, including the planned match between Al Nassr and Al Ahli.
  3. Riyadh airport was closed, prompting dozens of footballers to leave the country in recent hours.
  4. Despite alarms continuing overnight, the league has not formally suspended the rest of the matchday.
  5. Al Khaleej and Al Fayha are therefore due to play on, with hopes that a gradual easing of the situation can restore a measure of normality once possible retaliatory action has been ruled out.

The situation has revived fears felt across the region earlier this year, when the same conflict had already caused major sporting disruption, including the cancellation of the Finalissima. The mood remains one of “tense calm”, with clubs and players waiting for further developments.

A Spanish thread in a survival battle

The Al Khaleej-Al Fayha derby will carry a notable Spanish connection through Omar Mascarell and Jason Remeseiro. Both are expected to put the political and security anxiety surrounding the country aside for 90 minutes as their clubs fight to remain in the division.

Mascarell has become a fixture in the Al Khaleej side, starting every one of his eight appearances and playing 720 minutes. He has scored once. Remeseiro has contributed a goal and an assist in five games for Al Fayha, accumulating 305 minutes.

The pair know each other well from their years in LaLiga, but their reunion comes in circumstances far removed from a routine domestic fixture in Spain.

Mascarell close to the danger

The threat has been particularly immediate for Mascarell. From the Dammam/Saihat coast, he witnessed missile trails crossing the Saudi sky earlier this week. The area lies around 1,230 kilometres from the Yemeni border.

One projectile later struck close to King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, only about 33 kilometres from Al Khaleej’s base. Yet the midfielder and Remeseiro remain focused on the match, with points at the bottom of the table now sharing attention with events far beyond football.
