Aleksander Barkov Leaves Panthers-Sharks Game After Second-Period Fall

Aleksander Barkov’s return to the Florida Panthers lineup took an unsettling turn Thursday night in San Jose, where the captain left the game against the Sharks during the second period after going down in the right corner.

Barkov exits in second period

  1. Barkov was working for the puck along the boards in San Jose’s right corner while Florida was on the power play.
  2. The 31-year-old forward fell awkwardly during the battle.
  3. After getting back to his feet, Barkov signaled for the doors near the ice-resurfacing entrance to be opened and headed directly toward the Panthers dressing room.
  4. He dropped his gloves to the ice as he made his way off, ending his night against the Sharks.

The incident came in only Barkov’s second appearance of the new season. He logged 20:32 in Florida’s opener Tuesday, a 1-0 overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Return from a full-season absence

Barkov did not play for the Panthers during the 2025-26 season after suffering a right-knee injury on the opening day of training camp. He underwent surgery the following day to repair both his MCL and ACL.

He still found meaningful game action before returning to Florida. Barkov captained Finland at the 2026 IIHF World Championship in Switzerland in May, posting three goals and eight assists in 10 games as the Finns won gold.

Before Panthers camp, Barkov said his work with Finland had given him confidence in the knee.

“Going into camp, I felt better knowing I had played important games and that I felt good,” Barkov said in September. “As the tournament went on, I felt stronger, and I was very pleased with that.”

Florida’s longtime captain

The Panthers selected Barkov second overall in the 2013 NHL Draft, and he has been at the center of the franchise’s rise ever since. He entered Thursday with 286 goals and 496 assists for 782 regular-season points in 806 games.

In the playoffs, Barkov has produced 25 goals and 56 assists across 94 games. As captain, he led Florida to consecutive Stanley Cup titles in 2024 and 2025.

His defensive work has also made him one of the league’s most decorated forwards. Barkov has won the Selke Trophy three times, taking the award in 2021, 2024 and 2025.
