What it means for the Panthers opener
The Hurricanes begin their schedule Tuesday at 5 p.m. ET against Florida, with ESPN carrying the game. Nikishin’s contract situation means Carolina will need either Reilly’s experience or Legault’s upside to fill out the defense group.
Reilly offers the more established option after handling a regular rotation role last season, particularly when Slavin was unavailable. Legault has fewer NHL games on his ledger but has already spent time in the Hurricanes system and brings recent AHL playoff experience.
Tulsky did not offer a timetable for Nikishin’s return. “We are trying to find a solution,” he said, stressing that he intends to respect the privacy of conversations with the player. For now, the champions will drop the puck without one of last season’s key rookie contributors.
