Alexandra Eala’s rise from a teenage arrival at the Rafa Nadal Academy to a first WTA title in Washington has earned her a place on the TIME100 Next 2026 list, with Rafael Nadal hailing the Filipino as one of tennis’s most compelling young figures.
Eala was the only tennis player included in the annual selection of emerging global figures. She was placed in the Innovators group, one of five sections alongside Phenoms, Artists, Leaders and Advocates.
Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam singles champion, reflected on Eala’s development in a tribute that focused as much on her conduct away from the baseline as her rapid advance through the PIF WTA Rankings.
“Her capacity to listen, learn and continue getting better is one of her biggest qualities,” Nadal wrote. He added that Eala had remained “warm, approachable and humble” despite becoming a prominent player at a young age, and said he looked forward to following her next steps.
From academy prospect to WTA winner
Nadal first came to know Eala in 2018, when the then-13-year-old joined his academy. Seven years later, Eala also played a personal part in Nadal’s own return to the court after retirement.
Nadal recalled that Eala asked him to hit with her, prompting him to take up a racket for the first time in many months.
Her breakthrough at the highest level came in 2025, when she entered the Miami tournament as a wild card and defeated three Grand Slam champions on the way to the final. That run accelerated a climb from No. 140 to No. 18 in the PIF WTA Rankings over roughly a year and a half.
Eala then secured the biggest trophy of her career earlier this summer, lifting her first WTA Tour title in Washington, D.C.
A landmark player for the Philippines
The 2026 recognition follows a sequence of milestones for Eala and for Philippine tennis. Her ascent has drawn a sizeable audience at home and internationally, while helping create intense interest in a nation that had not previously produced a player ranked inside the Top 100.
With a Miami final, a Washington title and a place among the world’s leading young innovators, Eala’s next matches will now carry a broader spotlight than ever.
