Two dressing rooms, two different afternoons, and the same old demand from the bench: a team cannot drift through a Serie A match without hearing from its coach. After Napoli’s 1-1 draw in Florence, Massimiliano Allegri made his dissatisfaction clear to his players, believing the point had come at the end of an afternoon in which his side had allowed a lead to disappear.
The coach and the club
Napoli had gone ahead 1-0 before being pegged back by Fiorentina. The equaliser came through a deflection that wrong-footed goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, but the circumstances did not lessen Allegri’s frustration with the way his team had managed the closing phase.
Rather than soften the message after the match, Allegri spoke firmly to the squad in the dressing room. It was an intervention intended to underline that the break should be followed by renewed concentration and work on the training ground.
The episode in Florence arrived only a day after a similarly forceful response from Cristian Chivu during Inter’s meeting with Roma at the Olimpico. Inter were 2-0 down at half-time, with Roma in control under Gian Piero Gasperini, when Chivu delivered a sharp message to his own players.
The reaction came on the pitch after the interval. Lautaro Martinez scored as Inter fought back to draw 2-2, and Chivu did not deny that the half-time discussion had been intense.
“What was said at half-time stays between the team and me,” Chivu said after the game.
In the championship
For Allegri and Chivu alike, the dressing room remains part of the work of managing a long season. A coach can protect his players publicly while demanding more from them behind closed doors, particularly when recent league performances have offered repeated warnings.
