Massimiliano Allegri left Florence with a controlled anger that may carry more weight inside Napoli than any touchline outburst. There was no theatrical gesture after the failure to win at the Franchi, but the coach made clear that his players should be disturbed by the result.
“We have to be angry that we did not win,” Allegri said in the corridors of the stadium, in front of the cameras and again in his press conference. “If we are not, then there is a problem.”
The message was aimed at a side which, in his view, has repeated habits that will prevent it from moving forward in the championship. Allegri identified three central faults: a superficial approach to key phases of matches, insufficient personality, and too little ruthlessness in the opposing penalty area.
A warning before the break
The coach intends to address those shortcomings during the international break, with Frosinone set to be the point from which he expects a different Napoli. Allegri believes the team can no longer shelter behind excuses, particularly with October approaching and the room for mistakes narrowing.
Against Fiorentina, Napoli were judged to have lost concentration at damaging moments. They allowed the home side space to break forward on several occasions, opportunities Fiorentina did not convert. Yet the balance of urgency also troubled Allegri: Napoli appeared hesitant in the decisive passages, dropping deep around their own area while Fiorentina pursued an equaliser with greater force than Napoli showed in trying to secure victory.
Unfinished matches becoming a pattern
The strongest frustration came from Napoli’s inability to finish the contest when the chances arrived. Allegri saw the same failing in earlier matches against Inter and Bologna, and believes it has now become a pattern rather than an isolated lapse.
There were at least three major opportunities late on in Florence to take the win, but Napoli did not make them count. For Allegri, the response cannot be left to one forward or one moment of inspiration. He wants more from the entire group: greater commitment, sharper choices and the determination to turn promising situations into points.
The next stage of Napoli’s season will therefore begin with a simple demand from their coach: work with humility, raise the collective level and ensure that frustration after a missed victory becomes fuel rather than another familiar post-match regret.
