Max Allegri’s anger after Napoli’s 3-3 draw with Roma was not confined to the touchline. In the aftermath of Balerdi’s late equaliser, the Napoli coach was heard voicing his frustration away from the cameras, reopening a grievance connected to last season’s race for Champions League qualification.
The decision
Allegri had already made clear that he felt his dismissal during the match was unjust. Speaking after the game, he said he had been quiet before rising from the bench and insisted that, next time, he may simply remain seated rather than risk another punishment.
He described the draw as two points Napoli had let slip. While satisfied with his side’s performance, Allegri said he was too angry over the decisive incidents to assess the evening with full clarity.
Before his press conference, however, his frustration went beyond the game itself. During a quiet moment in the media room, his voice was heard by people nearby as he referred to last year’s Champions League outcome, suggesting that others had been helped into the competition and adding that he had paid the price while at Milan.
The remarks pointed back to the previous campaign, when Milan finished fifth while Roma and Como occupied places in the top four.
Roma were left disappointed and surprised that their Champions League qualification had been brought into the discussion. The club’s position is that the place was earned on the pitch, without preferential treatment or outside influence.
Roma’s closing run remains central to that argument: they collected 22 points across their final 10 matches of the season, while Milan took 13 over the same period.
Sunday’s picture
The 3-3 in Naples has therefore left more than a result to consider. Balerdi’s goal changed the immediate balance of the afternoon, and Allegri’s reaction revealed how quickly an argument over one decision can draw in the unresolved tensions of an entire championship season.
