Amorim Applies Manchester United Lesson to Milan’s Serie A Campaign

Ruben Amorim’s early work at Milan is already carrying the weight of a previous chapter in Manchester. The Portuguese coach has brought a lesson from his time at Manchester United into the Rossoneri season: a team cannot be asked to play in a way that does not suit the players available.

That message has emerged after Milan’s recent matches, with Amorim acknowledging that adaptation is sometimes necessary rather than stubbornly pursuing one fixed idea. It is an important principle for a club looking to give its coach authority while remaining competitive across a long Serie A campaign.

A lesson brought from Manchester

Amorim said he had felt the same issue during his spell at Manchester United and did not intend to repeat the mistake in Milan.

“What I have noticed in the last few matches is something I experienced in the same way at Manchester United,” he said. “That is why I cannot make the same mistake again. Sometimes we do not have the ideal characteristics to play in a particular manner. If that is the case, we have to adapt at least a little.”

For Milan, the point is less about abandoning a coach’s identity than recognising the realities of a squad. Amorim’s comments suggest that his approach will be shaped by the resources at hand, rather than imposed without adjustment.

Milan appointment also eased United’s costs

Amorim joined Milan in June after leaving Manchester United, where his dismissal and the departure of his staff carried a significant financial cost for the English club.

Manchester United’s accounts for the most recent season show that the final expense for ending Amorim’s contract and paying off his staff was €9.5 million. The original compensation figure had been set at €19.4 million, but his agreement included a clause reducing the amount if he took another job.

By appointing Amorim, Milan therefore helped lower the cost of United’s coaching change. The contrast is now visible in the mood around both clubs: some United supporters have used the phrase “Bring Amorim Back” online, while Milan are hoping that the difficult experience in England has given their coach a sharper sense of when conviction must be balanced with adjustment.
