Ancelotti Urges Lille to Turn Frustration Into Progress Against Le Havre

Lille return to the league under the hard light of a 2-1 defeat at Nice, with Davide Ancelotti asking his side to turn frustration into progress before Le Havre arrive on Saturday. The Lille coach has used the international break to examine a team he believes has not yet delivered the consistency required.

The move

Ancelotti’s immediate task is to lift Lille after their September 20 loss at Nice, a result he sees as potentially formative for the squad. He said defeats can leave lasting marks, but those moments can also help a group mature.

“There can often be a before and an after,” Ancelotti said. “The break came with the points we deserved. We have not always been consistent in our performances.”

The Italian said the disappointment is sharper after matches in which Lille have fallen short of their own level. For him, the responsibility does not stop with the players.

“My players’ problems are my problems,” he said. “We have to find a way to solve them.”

Lille had 13 or 14 senior players available during the three-week international window, alongside academy players Ancelotti described as talented. The period was split between rest, recovery, tactical review and work on areas needing improvement.

The French season around it

Lille host Le Havre at 17:15 on Saturday in the sixth round of Ligue 1, before travelling to Arsenal for a major Champions League fixture three days later. Le Havre begin the weekend bottom of the table, just as Nice had done before beating Lille, but Ancelotti is refusing to let the standings shape his preparation.

“I do not look too much at the table because many teams are close together and the season has only just started,” he said. “It is better to analyse the opponent properly.”

He expects rotation as Lille enter a demanding sequence of matches, stressing that the same starting side will not play every game. Ancelotti considers Le Havre defensively resilient and dangerous when they attack, and said Lille respect the challenge.

  • Nabil Bentaleb: fit and available after training throughout the week.
  • Hamza Igamane: unavailable.
  • Ethan Mbappé: unavailable with a front-foot issue that has also affected his ankle.

Bentaleb missed Algeria duty because of discomfort around the scar from his operation, but Ancelotti said the midfielder is now ready to feature. Lille’s only absentees are Igamane and Mbappé.

Mbappé’s recovery will be assessed with the Ligue 1 match at Brest on October 17 in mind. His Champions League suspension, following his red card against Real Betis on the opening matchday, will give him additional time to heal before his European return.
