Andrew Copp’s Late Goal Lifts Red Wings Past Flyers 2-1

Andrew Copp parked at the top of the crease and buried the go-ahead goal with 4:38 left Thursday, lifting the Detroit Red Wings past the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 at Little Caesars Arena. The result stopped Detroit’s three-game slide and left Philadelphia still searching for its first win of the season.

Copp finishes late crease scramble

The winning sequence began with Nate Danielson digging out the puck in the Philadelphia zone. He moved it to Michael Rasmussen behind the net, where Rasmussen first tried to force a chance past Flyers goaltender Joseph Woll before threading a pass across the blue paint for Copp’s finish.

  • Copp’s goal snapped a 1-1 tie in the final 4:38 of regulation.
  • Detroit improved to 2-3-2 after going 0-1-2 in its previous three outings.
  • Woll turned aside 24 shots in the losing effort for Philadelphia.

Johansson opens his NHL account

Anton Johansson supplied Detroit’s other goal, scoring his first in the NHL at 4:31 of the second period. Dylan Larkin carried the puck on a 2-on-1, and Johansson stepped into a one-timer from near the inner edge of the left faceoff circle to even the score.

Johansson became the third Red Wings player to record his first career NHL goal this month, following Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and William Wallinder.

Michkov gives Flyers an early edge

Philadelphia had grabbed the lead late in the opening period. Matvei Michkov knocked the puck home from the right side of the Detroit net at 17:32, putting the Flyers ahead 1-0 before Johansson answered in the middle frame.

The Flyers had a prime chance to restore their lead before the second intermission. Noah Cates broke in on a shorthanded 2-on-1 with 21 seconds remaining, but Detroit goaltender Daniil Tarasov made the stop.

  • Tarasov made 17 saves for Detroit.
  • Michkov scored Philadelphia’s lone goal.
  • Philadelphia fell to 0-6-3, extending the longest season-opening winless stretch in franchise history to nine games.
