Andros Townsend Reveals Diet That Aided Steamroller Injury Recovery

Andros Townsend has described the unusual recovery routine he adopted after being struck by a steamroller during the interval of a match, saying he chose food rather than medication as he worked to get moving again.

The former England international set out a 24-hour eating plan that he said was designed to give his body what it needed during his recovery and to support the inflammatory process without relying on drugs.

Townsend’s menu began with six whole eggs, which he described as a source of high-quality protein for muscle repair. He then included blueberries, extra-virgin olive oil and raw cocoa, pointing to their polyphenols and flavanols, compounds he said have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Wild smoked salmon was another part of the plan, selected for its omega-3 fatty acids. Townsend said these fats play a role in inflammation signalling and muscle recovery.

There was also raw cheese, which he used as a calcium source for bone health, and an orange for vitamin C, which he said was important to collagen production.

The rest of the day’s intake included tomatoes, kiwi and a soup made with chicken feet that had been slowly cooked for eight hours. It made for a distinctly unconventional half-time aftermath, though Townsend’s stated aim was straightforward: recovery, movement and a route away from medication.
