Armando González Benched as Olympiacos Beat Panathinaikos

In Athens, Olympiacos edged Panathinaikos by the narrowest margin in the sixth round of the Greek Super League, but Armando “Hormiga” González remained unused on the bench as his wait for a first league goal continued.

The Mexican forward has now gone five Super League matches without scoring since entering the side’s domestic campaign. Cup fixtures are not included in that sequence.

A stop-start beginning in Piraeus

González made his first league appearance in round two against Asteras, coming on in the 68th minute for Joel Roca as coach José Luis Mendilibar looked to add fresh energy in attack. He did not score, although he passed up a clear opportunity in front of goal. Olympiacos nevertheless claimed a 1-0 victory.

His next outing came against Volos in the third round, when he was introduced during the first half following a serious injury to teammate Ayoub El Kaabi. The former Chivas player again left the match without making an impact on the scoresheet.

The 24-year-old was handed a starting place against OFI Crete in round four. He produced one of Olympiacos’ more dangerous moments with a 63rd-minute effort that was heading towards goal, but could not find the finish before being substituted later in the contest.

Against Levadiakos in round five, González was brought on after the interval and helped raise the tempo of Olympiacos’ forward play in another 1-0 win. A goal, however, again eluded him.

Bench role after Mexico duty

After appearing for Mexico during the international window, González was left among the substitutes for the derby against Panathinaikos. Olympiacos secured the result, while their Mexican striker’s domestic scoring drought moved into a fifth successive league match.
