Armando González Scores as Olympiacos Beat Jagiellonia in Europa League

In Piraeus, on a European night that followed the arrival of another striker, Armando “Hormiga” González gave Olympiacos a timely reminder of his own value. The Mexican forward scored his first UEFA Europa League goal as the Greek club recovered to beat Jagiellonia Białystok 2-1 in their League Phase opener.

Armando González scores on his Europa League debut

Olympiacos had confirmed the signing of Marius Mouandilmadji only hours before kick-off, but González answered the competition for attacking places with a decisive contribution. The former Chivas player started against the Polish visitors and helped set the course for the comeback.

  • Jagiellonia took the lead in the 20th minute after a counter-attack.
  • González had already shown a willingness to press high and attack the visiting defence, although Olympiacos initially struggled to give him clear shooting opportunities.
  • Shortly before half-time, he tested goalkeeper Sławomir Abramowicz with a curling effort from outside the area, forcing a corner.
  • The equaliser arrived from the next sequence: Jota Silva flicked the ball on, Panagiotis Retsos shot straight at Abramowicz, and González reacted to turn the rebound in from close range in the 43rd minute.

The goal was González’s fourth in six appearances for Olympiacos. He has also supplied two assists. While he is still waiting for his first Super League Greece goal, he has scored three times in the Greek Cup, where both of his assists have also come.

Olympiacos find a response after the break

Coach Imanol Alguacil altered his side during the second half, withdrawing González in the 62nd minute and introducing Roman Yaremchuk. The Ukrainian forward had limited sight of goal for much of his time on the pitch, but made the key intervention late on.

In the 84th minute, Yaremchuk headed home from a corner to complete Olympiacos’ turnaround and secure a 2-1 victory.

  • Olympiacos 2-1 Jagiellonia Białystok
  • González equalised in the 43rd minute.
  • Yaremchuk scored the winner in the 84th minute.
  • González was replaced by Yaremchuk in the 62nd minute.

A European win after the OFI setback

The result brought Olympiacos back to winning ways after their difficult weekend defeat to OFI Crete in the Greek Super League. Their victory also placed them among the seven clubs to open the Europa League League Phase with a win.
