At the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, Armando “Hormiga” González gave Olympiacos a decisive late contribution in Europe League play, coming off the bench to force the own goal that settled a difficult night against Sparta Prague.
The Mexican forward entered in the 62nd minute, with Olympiacos still seeking a way through after a restrained first half. The Greek side had kept the visitors at bay but found few clear openings before the interval, and the contest remained tight deep into the second period.
González quickly had a chance to make his mark. The former Chivas academy player arrived for a move down the right but could not turn the ball home at the far post. He remained involved, however, and his pressure in the decisive sequence led to the goal being recorded as a Sparta Prague own goal by UEFA.
It was enough for Imanol Alguacil’s side, who again navigated a European fixture with a narrow margin. Olympiacos now have nine points from their opening three Europa League matches and extended their winning run to six games in all competitions.
After the final whistle, González was applauded by the home crowd and addressed the supporters in a brief message. “Hello, Olympiacos fans. I am very happy with today’s victory and with your support. We want more,” he said.
The result sends Olympiacos back into domestic action with momentum intact. Their next assignment is in the Greek Super League against Kalamata, while González has strengthened his case to be considered for further opportunities in Alguacil’s attacking plans.
