Arsenal Fight Back Against Leeds Ahead of Lille Champions League Clash

Arsenal found their spark only after Leeds had silenced the Emirates. A difficult afternoon became a 2-1 recovery, with Lille now waiting in north London in the Champions League phase just three days away.

Arsenal survive Leeds test before Lille visit

The English champions moved level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City, at least until City face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday at 17:30. But Mikel Arteta’s side had to overturn a one-goal deficit against an unbeaten Leeds team that arrived with two wins and three draws from its opening five league matches.

Arsenal were returning from a 3-0 defeat to Brighton before the international break, while Arteta had signed a new contract earlier in the week running until 2030.

A tightly controlled first half for Leeds

  1. Leeds set up in a compact 5-4-1 system and restricted Arsenal’s possession to little effect. Kai Havertz, selected at centre-forward despite an adductor problem suffered with Germany against the Netherlands in the Nations League, produced Arsenal’s only shot on target before half-time with a weak header in the 21st minute.
  2. Viktor Gyökeres remained out of the starting side despite scoring four goals in four matches during the international window.
  3. Leeds created the clearer openings. Anton Stach saw an effort blocked by team-mate Jayden Bogle in the 25th minute.
  4. Goalkeeper David Raya then denied Bogle after an uncertain rush outside his area. Raya was nearly caught out by an Ethan Ampadu header in the 35th minute and later made a strong one-handed stop from Gabriel Gudmundsson’s powerful tight-angle attempt.

Second-half turnaround

  1. Leeds took the lead in the 55th minute. Gudmundsson delivered a cross to the far post, where James Justin struck a composed right-footed finish. Gabriel, positioned on the line, could only head the ball into his own net.
  2. Arsenal replied seven minutes later. Ben White headed the ball into the path of Riccardo Calafiori, who beat James Trafford from close range with a left-footed shot that bounced before crossing the line.
  3. Bruno Guimaraes entered in the 63rd minute and made the difference seven minutes later. Declan Rice supplied an inventive backheel and Guimaraes drove a low right-footed finish past Trafford to put Arsenal ahead.
  4. Rice later produced another strong run inside the Leeds box before finding Martin Odegaard, who missed a major chance in front of goal in the 83rd minute.
  5. Arsenal did not add a third, with Bukayo Saka wasting a late counterattack in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

The margin was narrow, but the result restores momentum after Brighton’s heavy win before the break. Arsenal now turn towards Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Lille, carrying three points and a reminder that their attacking rhythm can arrive late.
