Atlético Academy Hit Three Past Manchester United in Youth League

Atlético de Madrid’s academy side answered a difficult domestic weekend with a 3-0 UEFA Youth League victory over Manchester United, producing three outstanding finishes and strengthening their position in a league phase where goal difference could matter in the chase for the top six and the knockout rounds.

Atlético turn the page in Youth League win

The match began with a minute’s silence for Ana Merodio Borja, the mother of Koke and Borja Resurrección. Borja Resurrección is part of Pedro Moya’s coaching staff.

  1. On Sunday night, Taufik Seidu had conceded a penalty in Alcalá as Zaragoza earned a draw, an error that underlined the rapid changes of a young player’s week. By Tuesday afternoon, he was back at the base of Atlético’s midfield in the Youth League.
  2. Adrián Lis, who had made his Madrileño debut on Sunday, was selected from the start against Manchester United as Atlético sought a significant European result.
  3. Atlético took control after 10 minutes. Joel Sánchez drove forward from the left, cut inside onto his right foot and drilled a low effort into the near corner.
  4. Manchester United almost replied when Ibragimov tried to lift his finish over the goalkeeper, but the attempt cleared the crossbar.
  5. Atlético then created two strong opportunities to extend the lead. Fitzgerald weaved through defenders in the area before Byrne-Hughes saved his angled shot, while Lis met a cross from Fitzgerald with a header that brought another excellent stop from the United goalkeeper.
  6. Fitzgerald did find the second goal with a right-footed strike that brushed the frame of the goal before flying into the top corner, leaving Byrne-Hughes with no chance.
  7. United had more of the ball after the interval, with Mantato particularly able to find space, but Atlético held their shape and prevented a route back into the contest.
  8. Gonzalo Gross, introduced from the bench, settled the afternoon. He turned sharply, exchanged passes with Trujillano and carried the ball forward before sending a left-footed shot inside the near post for 3-0.

European points and a statement of finishing

It was not always a fluent performance from Atlético, particularly during spells when they became too comfortable after taking the lead and later sat deep. But their finishing was decisive: Joel Sánchez, Fitzgerald and Gross each scored a goal of real quality.

The result gives Atlético four points from their meetings with Liverpool and Manchester United, while the emphatic margin may prove valuable in a competition in which the final league standings, including goal difference, will shape access to the top six and the next phase.

For an Atlético academy that continues to measure itself against Europe’s leading development systems, the victory offered a sharp response to England’s challenge. It also came as a tribute to Koke and Borja Resurrección following their family’s loss, with the senior side now due to follow the youth team’s lead on the European stage.
