Madrid has found a clearer autumn light at the Metropolitano. Atlético’s 4-0 win over Osasuna on Wednesday delivered a second consecutive clean-sheet victory and tightened the atmosphere ahead of Sunday’s city derby with Real Madrid, even as midfielder Obed Vargas again watched from the substitutes’ bench.
Atlético Madrid 4-0 Osasuna: confidence returns before the derby
Diego Simeone’s side had arrived at this part of the calendar after a difficult opening to the month, losing 3-0 to Athletic Club in LaLiga and then 2-1 at Liverpool in the Champions League. The response has been emphatic: a 3-0 away success at Real Sociedad followed by Osasuna’s defeat in the Spanish capital.
Jonathan David was central to the latest result in only his third Atlético appearance. The Canadian opened the scoring in the 24th minute and later supplied Lee Kang-in for the second goal, nine minutes into the second half. He now has three direct goal contributions in three matches, having registered his first Atlético goal against Real Sociedad.
Osasuna briefly threatened to pull level during the first half, but their equaliser did not stand. Once Atlético resumed control after the interval, Robin Le Normand made it 3-0 in the 64th minute. Alex Baena completed the scoring eight minutes from time after an impressive move involving Johnny Cardoso.
The result leaves Atlético third in LaLiga on 13 points. Real Madrid and Barcelona are both on 15, although Barcelona have played one match fewer. Atlético now host Real Madrid at the Metropolitano on Sunday, 20 September, in the seventh round of the league season.
Another wait for Obed Vargas
For Vargas, the encouraging team performance brought no personal breakthrough. The Mexican midfielder was named among Simeone’s substitutes but was not used, extending his wait for a first appearance of the 2026-27 campaign.
He has now been included in seven matchday squads without playing: six in LaLiga and one in the Champions League. His most recent competitive outing for Atlético remains the 5-1 defeat to Villarreal on the final matchday of last season.
