Barcelona carried their league momentum back into Europe’s demanding October with a 3-0 home win over Getafe, a result that preserved their perfect domestic start and offered Hansi Flick a controlled evening before the Champions League visit of Galatasaray. Anthony Gordon struck inside the opening minute, Gabriel Jesus added another before the interval and Jules Koundé completed the scoring after the break at Camp Nou.
Barcelona protect their perfect start
The leaders began the eighth league round with seven wins from seven and 21 points, while Getafe arrived in 12th place on eight points. José Bordalás set his side up in a 5-4-1, with Iván Azón alone in attack, seeking to keep the score close and find a late opening.
Instead, Barcelona made the contest safe early. Getafe had never won at Camp Nou and had taken only four points from 23 previous visits; their difficult record in the stadium continued despite David Soria making several important stops.
- Gordon put Barcelona ahead in the first minute, driving across the edge of the area before his shot took a touch off Mario Martín and beat Soria, who got a hand to the ball.
- Barcelona controlled possession and territory, with Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Gavi all involved in efforts to stretch Getafe’s low block. Soria denied Olmo, while Gudelj blocked Gavi and later another Olmo attempt.
- Gabriel Jesus scored the second after Zaid Romero lost possession while trying to play out from the edge of his own penalty area. The Brazilian finished at the near post for his second league goal in four appearances and his first in a league starting line-up.
- Zaid Romero was forced off with a left-leg problem in the 37th minute, leaving the pitch in tears as Abqar replaced him.
- Barcelona went in 2-0 up after posting 83.7% possession, 461 passes and a defensive line stationed near halfway. They had produced eight shots, four on target, and 0.41 expected goals; Getafe had one attempt and 0.07 xG.
- Getafe had brief second-half moments through Mojica, whose powerful effort hit the side netting, and Azón, but Joan García was not seriously troubled.
- Flick refreshed his midfield by bringing on Pedri and Fermín for Gavi and Dani Olmo, before Marc Bernal also entered alongside Adeyemi.
- Koundé sealed the three points when he met Yamal’s cross at the far post with no defender close enough to challenge him.
Yamal creates, Koundé reaches a Barcelona landmark
Yamal was central to Barcelona’s attacking rhythm, providing the delivery for Koundé’s third goal and repeatedly threatening from the right. He had arrived in strong form, having scored or assisted in every match apart from the first two league fixtures, with seven goals and four assists in seven games.
Koundé’s goal added to an already significant afternoon. His 194th appearance for Barcelona made him the French player with the most matches for the club across all competitions, moving beyond Eric Abidal’s mark of 193.
Rodri set the tempo from midfield, recording 134 touches and completing 123 passes at 96.9% accuracy. He won five of seven duels and two of three tackles, providing the control that allowed Barcelona to manage the second half without jeopardising their lead.
Eric García, Barcelona’s captain alongside Getafe skipper Djené, also continued to underline his importance in Flick’s side. He made seven clearances, was among the side’s most involved players and led their defensive work in the final third.
Getafe’s resistance fades
Getafe did find some defensive resilience after the early blow. Gudelj made key blocks, while Soria denied Olmo and dealt with long-range efforts from Eric García. Gabriel Jesus headed over when presented with a chance for a second, and Koundé missed from close range before making amends after half-time.
But Bordalás’ side could not convert their sporadic breaks into genuine pressure. Azón’s first-half attempt was collected by Joan García, while Mojica and Terrats were among several Getafe players booked. Boselli was cautioned for pulling Gordon, and Terrats saw yellow after protesting the build-up to Koundé’s goal.
Dani Olmo received Barcelona’s only booking for a late challenge on Mario Martín.
European consequences of a domestic win
The victory gives Barcelona a clean return from the international break before an exceptionally demanding run. Galatasaray are next, followed by fixtures against Betis, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. The PSG match and El Clásico fall in the same week, making squad management as important as results.
Flick was able to rest and rotate key midfielders during a match Barcelona largely dominated, an important benefit after a lengthy international window in which many of his players accumulated heavy minutes. Spain internationals Rodri, Pedri, Dani Olmo and Yamal were all involved internationally, while Koundé returned from France duty and Gordon had played for England.
There is, however, a significant concern before Europe. Raphinha will miss both the Getafe match and the upcoming Galatasaray game after failing to come through an individual fitness test with sufficient comfort.
For Getafe, the defeat begins a demanding 22-day sequence of seven matches, including their Conference League campaign, Copa del Rey commitments and difficult league travel. They entered the match having qualified for the Conference League’s league phase by eliminating Partizan, but their limited attacking return remains an issue: they had scored only four league goals, all at home, before travelling to Barcelona.
Barcelona’s 3-0 victory therefore did more than maintain a flawless league record. It sent them into a month that will shape their European standing with confidence intact, key players able to share the workload, and a side still capable of turning territorial control into an emphatic scoreline.
