Alphonso Davies will miss Canada’s extended September international window after Bayern Munich agreed to let the left-back take his delayed honeymoon.
Canada coach Jesse Marsch said the decision was made jointly with the national-team captain. Davies will not join Canada’s camp and will also be unavailable to Bayern during the break, which runs from 21 September to 6 October following a FIFA calendar change.
Honeymoon before Canada return
Davies married shortly after the World Cup and will now use the window for his wedding trip. Marsch said the player had wanted to report for duty, while Canada also wanted him in camp.
“We discussed whether he could spend the first half of the camp on his honeymoon and then join us,” Marsch said. “But I felt he should finish that, then continue working on his fitness and form.”
Canada will play friendlies against Chile, Peru and the United States during the three-week break. Marsch expects Davies to return for the November programme, with further important fixtures also scheduled for March and the next international cycle.
“We want him ready to commit fully to the national team in every respect,” Marsch said.
Careful management after injury
Davies tore his cruciate ligament in March 2025. His return in December was followed by further absences, limiting his availability for Canada in recent months.
At the home World Cup, he played only 15 minutes as a substitute in the 1-0 round-of-16 win over South Africa. He remained on the bench in Canada’s other matches, including the 3-0 defeat to Morocco in the last 16 that ended the campaign.
The Bayern defender remains on 60 international appearances, with his 61st cap postponed until at least November.
Marsch, formerly RB Leipzig coach, has noted Davies’ improving condition at Bayern. “He is playing very well, looks very fit and feels very good,” he said.
