Bayern and Arsenal Draw as LASK Stun Sporting in Champions League

Across Europe’s midweek Champions League programme, Munich staged the evening’s headline contest while Portugal supplied its sharpest turn. Matchday three closed with Bayern Munich and Arsenal sharing a four-goal draw, Real Madrid finding authority against Leipzig, and LASK reviving their campaign on Sporting Lisbon’s ground.

The news from the club

Bayern and Arsenal delivered the standout meeting of the round, a 2-2 result between two sides regarded as genuine contenders for the trophy. The contest matched its billing, with neither team able to force a late advantage.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, produced a far more convincing display in their 4-1 win over Leipzig. The German visitors caused problems before the interval, but Madrid improved markedly after the break. Kylian Mbappé and Yan Diomandé were central to the victory.

Aston Villa continued one of the competition’s strongest starts. Their third successive Champions League win took them to nine points and second place in the league-phase standings, with only Paris Saint-Germain ahead of them.

The picture was considerably bleaker for Manchester United. Michael Carrick’s side were beaten 4-1 by Como, the Italian club coached by Cesc Fàbregas. Nico Paz led a composed Como performance as United again struggled to produce ideas in a disappointing season.

Lille remain without a point after three defeats in this Champions League campaign. Galatasaray claimed a 4-2 victory without being seriously troubled, leaving the French side searching for a route back into contention.

A Portuguese upset changes the race

LASK arrived in Lisbon after two losses, including a 6-3 defeat against Liverpool, but overturned expectations by beating Sporting. The Austrian side’s result in Portugal moved them into the play-off places in the league phase and gave their European run a welcome new direction.
