Bayern Coach Vincent Kompany Stable After Training Collapse

Bayern Munich expect Vincent Kompany to be absent for weeks after the Belgian coach collapsed during training and was taken to hospital by ambulance on Friday.

Sporting director Max Eberl said Kompany, 40, is stable and remains under medical observation while doctors complete further checks. Eberl spoke with the coach and his wife on Friday evening before Bayern’s Bundesliga meeting with SC Freiburg.

“The positive news is that he is stable,” Eberl said. “He collapsed yesterday and will stay in hospital for a few more days until everything has been checked.”

Kompany had been watching a Bayern amateur-team session when he fell ill. He had previously said that a viral infection last week had left him weakened.

Bayern do not yet know the cause of the incident or the precise timetable for his return. Eberl made clear that a quick recovery cannot be assumed.

“We first need to establish what it is and then what that means for the recovery period,” he said. “We are not talking about days, but weeks. That is clear to everyone.”

Eberl said the club would give Kompany all the time required, stressing that the coach’s health must come before football. Bayern now prepare for Freiburg without their head coach on the touchline.
