Jacob Fowler held the crease through 65 scoreless minutes, then Zachary Bolduc supplied the only shootout goal as the Montreal Canadiens edged the Detroit Red Wings 1-0 at Bell Centre on Saturday.
- Fowler stopped all 30 Detroit shots in his second consecutive start. Montreal improved to 2-2-1 after entering on a three-game skid (0-2-1).
- Bolduc beat Daniil Tarasov through the legs in the sixth shootout round. Fowler answered by denying Nate Danielson on Detroit’s next attempt.
- Tarasov made 30 saves in his first start for the Red Wings, who fell to 1-3-1 one night after a 6-3 loss to the Seattle Kraken.
- Montreal went 0-for-4 with the man advantage and has scored once on 17 power-play opportunities this season.
- Fowler’s key regulation stop came at 3:35 of the third period, when he extended his left pad against Andrew Copp after the Detroit forward drove in alone and moved to his backhand.
- The Canadiens had three apparent goals erased. Cole Caufield’s first-period chance was ruled short of completely crossing the goal line after review.
- Bolduc had a second-period goal called back because Jake Evans interfered with Tarasov in the crease.
- Alexandre Texier appeared to end it 2:37 into overtime, but Bolduc was ruled offside on the sequence.
It was a night of empty net fronts and overturned celebrations for Montreal, but Fowler made sure none of Detroit’s chances became the difference. His shutout carried the Canadiens into the tiebreaker, where Bolduc finally found a puck-sized opening.
