The afternoon turned decisively in Bournemouth’s favour inside the opening quarter-hour. Tavernier had already put the home side ahead after five minutes, arriving in the middle to head Evanilson’s delivery into the net.
Sunderland had threatened from a Granit Xhaka free-kick when Kevin Danso headed narrowly wide, but their recovery job became considerably harder in the 17th minute. Danso was dismissed after fouling Evanilson in the Bournemouth half, leaving the visitors to negotiate the bulk of the contest with 10 men.
Andoni Iraola’s side kept pressing. Rayan was particularly lively, testing Robin Roefs from close range and again from the edge of the box, while Adam Smith, James Hill and Tavernier all had attempts that failed to add to the lead. Evanilson also saw an effort blocked before half-time, and Rayan’s late first-half drive was turned away near the top corner.
Bournemouth make the extra man count
The second goal arrived three minutes after the restart. Evanilson found space in the centre of the area and struck left-footed beyond Roefs to give Bournemouth the breathing room their first-half pressure had suggested.
There was no grand Sunderland comeback after that, although Trai Hume and Enzo Le Fée both sent efforts wide and the visitors won a corner through António Silva. Bournemouth, meanwhile, continued to create openings: Evanilson missed from close range, Marcus Tavernier had a low effort saved on the line, and Ryan Christie headed over from a corner.
Justin Kluivert came on just after the hour and twice went close late on, one effort being blocked and two others drifting off target. Amine Adli also fired wide after Rayan’s cross, while Rayan himself had an attempt blocked before making way in the closing stages.
The match had its interruptions. Nordi Mukiele required treatment during the first half, Evanilson was briefly attended to after the interval, and Habib Diarra was hurt late on. Chris Rigg’s afternoon ended on 65 minutes when Sunderland sent on Jules Ahoka after the midfielder had suffered an injury.
Sunderland made a double alteration before that, bringing on Luke O’Nien for Omar Alderete and Diarra for Tymur Tutierov. Bournemouth introduced Kluivert for Lewis Cook, then used Álvaro Rodríguez, Adli, Ben Gannon-Doak and Bafodé Diakité from the bench.
A busy book
Danso’s red card was the defining disciplinary moment, but there were cautions too for Bournemouth’s António Silva, Cook and Christie, as well as Sunderland’s Alderete and Rigg. The home side saw out six minutes of added time without allowing the contest to become awkward, even if Kluivert continued to hunt a third.
Bournemouth’s task was made simpler by the sending-off, but there was still proper work in the finish: an early goal, a quick second-half strike and enough pressure to keep Sunderland pinned back. Sunderland will reflect on Danso’s departure and a long afternoon spent chasing a game with a man short. The next week brings another chance for Bournemouth to carry this attacking authority into their next fixture, while Sunderland must regroup quickly after a defeat that became steep once the numbers changed.
