Manchester United’s slide deepened at Old Trafford as Bournemouth swept to a 3-0 victory, leaving Michael Carrick with little room left to manoeuvre and the club just one point above the relegation places.
Four days after a 4-1 Champions League hammering at Como, United needed the sort of home response that can steady a season. Instead, they were second best from the opening minutes against a Bournemouth side who controlled possession, found space with ease and added a second successive league win without ever appearing under serious strain.
Rayan struck first in the 38th minute, Tavernier doubled the lead five minutes later, and Evanilson completed the job with 20 minutes remaining. United have now gone eight matches without a victory and sit 16th in the table, with the drop zone uncomfortably close.
Bournemouth take control before the interval
Carrick made four changes from the side beaten in Italy, while Bruno Fernandes was left on the bench following his recent criticism of the United manager. The reshuffle brought no greater authority. Bournemouth began brightly and had United pinned back for long spells, with the home side repeatedly surrendering the ball and struggling to create any rhythm.
Leny Yoro, one of those brought into the side, cleared a Rayan effort from close to the goal line early on. It proved only a brief escape. Marco Rose’s visitors continued to find their way into dangerous areas, while United offered precious little at the other end.
The breakthrough came from a Justin Kluivert free-kick. His delivery reached Rayan at the far post, where the forward was left unmarked to turn a first-time finish into the net.
United did have a chance to answer immediately when Bryan Mbeumo broke forward, but Petrovic denied him. Bournemouth then punished another defensive lapse. Yoro made a costly error, allowing Truffer to set up Tavernier for a simple finish in the 43rd minute.
Some supporters had already begun leaving before half-time, having seen their side concede twice in five minutes with an all too familiar lack of resistance.
No route back for United
Carrick changed personnel at the break, introducing Cunha for Tielemans, but did not turn to Fernandes. The midfielder only began warming up in the 58th minute before returning to the bench shortly afterwards.
The second half began much as the first had ended. Within half a minute, Heaven’s mistake allowed Evanilson to score, though the effort was ruled out for offside. Rayan then passed up another opportunity to make it three.
United attempted to edge higher up the pitch, but there was little conviction in their work and Bournemouth remained composed. The visitors managed their lead comfortably, rarely looking troubled by a side whose attacks lacked both continuity and menace.
The third goal arrived after another damaging mistake. Lisandro failed to deal with the danger, Evanilson rounded Lammens after the goalkeeper came out poorly, and rolled the ball into an empty net.
For Bournemouth, it was an assured afternoon and a deserved result. For United, it was another bleak chapter in a run that has turned Old Trafford into an increasingly unforgiving place for Carrick and his players.
