Brewers Keep Same 26-Man Roster for NLCS Opener Against Dodgers

MILWAUKEE — The Brewers did not make a move after putting away the Padres in the National League Division Series. Their 26-man group for the NL Championship Series against the Dodgers is unchanged, giving Milwaukee continuity and a notably fresh pitching staff for Game 1 on Sunday.

NLCS roster breakdown Players
Pitchers 13
Position players 13
Total roster 26
Game 1 start 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT / 5 p.m. PT

Fresh arms for a longer series

Milwaukee had three full days between its Division Series clincher and the opening game of the Dodgers series. More importantly, three pitchers on the roster — left-handers Shane Drohan and Kyle Harrison, plus right-hander Chad Patrick — were not used at all against San Diego.

That depth matters in a best-of-seven series, particularly against a Dodgers club that can stretch a bullpen over multiple long nights. Brewers president of baseball operations Matt Arnold pointed to Milwaukee’s experience in the 2018 NLCS, when Junior Guerra was called upon in the 13th inning of Game 4 at Dodger Stadium.

Arnold said the club wants enough coverage to avoid reaching the kind of exhausted late-inning situation that arose in that game. Milwaukee has faced this October road before against Los Angeles, he said, and believes it is prepared for another one.
