Brewers, Rays Meet in World Series Seeking First Franchise Title

Milwaukee and Tampa Bay earned the long road to the Fall Classic, and now they bring the two best regular-season records in baseball to the same October stage. The Brewers went 103-59, the Rays finished 98-64, and one of them will leave this World Series with the first championship in franchise history.

Game 1 of the World Series Presented by Capital One is set for Friday at 8 p.m. ET, airing on FOX, FOX Deportes and FOX One. For Milwaukee, the series also carries a chance to make a larger piece of North American postseason history.

A Fall Classic built by the standings

This is only the sixth World Series in the Wild Card Era, which began in 1995, to match the top regular-season club from each league. The Brewers owned baseball’s best mark for a second consecutive season, while the Rays finished atop the American League.

The 2026 postseason has largely followed the regular-season ledger. In every series so far, the club with the superior regular-season record has advanced. The lone apparent seeding upset came in the American League Wild Card Series, where sixth-seeded Chicago eliminated third-seeded Houston. But the White Sox were 84-78, ahead of the Astros at 81-81, so Chicago still had the better record.

  1. MLB adopted its present postseason arrangement in 2022, following format changes by the NBA in 2021, the NFL in 2020 and the NHL in 2014.
  2. Since those four leagues moved to their current setups, no complete postseason has ended with the better regular-season team winning every game or series.
  3. Milwaukee can help create that first such postseason if it beats Tampa Bay in the World Series.

The recent reminder of October’s volatility

Postseason brackets rarely obey the standings cleanly. Each of the four major North American leagues recently had a lower-record club take down a stronger regular-season opponent.

  • The Dodgers, 93-69, beat the 94-68 Blue Jays in the 2025 World Series.
  • The Knicks, 53-29, defeated the 62-20 Spurs in the 2026 NBA Finals.
  • The Bills, 12-5, knocked out the 13-4 Jaguars in January’s NFL Wild Card round.
  • The Golden Knights, 39-26-17, eliminated the 55-16-11 Avalanche in the 2026 NHL Western Conference Final.

Baseball’s 162-game schedule is designed to separate clubs over a long summer, even in a sport where a short series can turn on a bullpen inning, a bounce or one well-timed swing. The Brewers and Rays have carried the weight of that regular-season work into the final round.

Milwaukee’s October formula

The Brewers did not reach this point on record alone. Their identity has traveled into October: strong defense, dependable pitching and a bullpen capable of shutting down late innings. On offense, Milwaukee has created discomfort by putting balls in play and using team speed to force hurried throws and difficult decisions.

There has been another element this month, too. The Brewers have found more power than expected, adding extra-base thunder to a lineup already built to manufacture pressure. That makes them a tougher club to contain, but Tampa Bay stands between Milwaukee and both the Commissioner’s Trophy and a place in a postseason first across the major sports.
