Bruno Fernandes and Michael Carrick Clash After Manchester United’s Como Defeat

Manchester United’s difficult continental spell has carried the noise from the pitch into the corridors of the club. After a 4-1 defeat away to Como, captain Bruno Fernandes questioned the team’s approach, and Michael Carrick answered with a blunt reminder that tactics count for little without effort.

From Madrid to Como

  1. United’s players have increasingly faced the media after defeats, with Lisandro Martínez speaking following the 2-0 loss to Atlético de Madrid.
  2. Bruno Fernandes then addressed the damaging defeat in Como, where he ended the match on the bench.
  3. The Portuguese midfielder said United had been caught out early on too often and had failed to make their work without the ball count.

Fernandes placed responsibility for the plan with Carrick and his staff, while making clear that the players’ performance had fallen well short. He said the choice not to press opponents individually left room behind the United line when they tried to win possession back.

“When you allow teams of that level space, they grow in confidence,” Fernandes said. He added that the coaching staff would have to review the match, but argued that the side must show greater courage when under pressure, accept the risk of pushing higher and make opponents less comfortable.

The captain’s assessment extended beyond the defensive structure. United, he said, had barely closed down the player in possession, had produced too few effective movements on the ball and had seen little work as intended.

Carrick’s response

Carrick was told of Fernandes’ comments after the game and offered a concise reply. “Whatever system or tactic you use, you do not win if you do not run,” he said.

The United coach declined to discuss whether his position was under threat, but apologised to supporters after the display in northern Italy. Carrick said he felt the club deeply because of his role and his regard for the institution, adding that such a performance could not be accepted.

A growing strain at Old Trafford

The exchange has added to a tense atmosphere around United as results continue to evade them. Players have begun to speak publicly after defeats, while Carrick has now responded directly to criticism from his captain.

There has also been speculation over possible departures for both Martínez and Fernandes. The Portugal international called for everyone at the club to recognise that United can no longer rely on its past, a message delivered as the pressure around Carrick and his squad grows sharper.
