Burkina Faso Disputes AFA Travel and Financial Terms for Argentina Trip

Buenos Aires was meant to offer Burkina Faso a rare international occasion at the Estadio Monumental, but the build-up has instead been dominated by a dispute over the African side’s travel, accommodation and financial arrangements.

The news from the club

Burkina Faso’s federation has raised objections to the conditions put in place for the trip to Argentina, accusing the Argentine Football Association of cutting costs too severely for a visiting national team.

At the centre of the complaint was an itinerary that would have taken more than 25 hours and involved several connections before the delegation reached Argentina. Burkina Faso’s senior players considered the journey incompatible with the professional conditions required for an international fixture and declined to make the trip.

The concerns extended beyond the flights. The federation also objected to the hotels proposed for the squad, arguing that the accommodation did not meet the expected standard for a national-team visit.

A further point of disagreement concerned the match receipts. Burkina Faso maintained that all income from ticket sales would remain with the host federation, adding to its dissatisfaction with the terms surrounding the game.

With the first-team squad unwilling to travel, the fixture at the Monumental was left in doubt. Burkina Faso’s officials moved quickly to preserve the engagement, calling on the country’s Under-23 selection to take the senior side’s place.

A late arrival in Argentina

The Under-23 group then made an urgent journey to Buenos Aires and arrived only three and a half hours before kick-off. The narrow window left little time for the usual preparations, turning what had been scheduled as an international match into a hurried solution after the senior players’ refusal to travel.
