Caleb Williams Nears Return as Bears Prepare for Falcons Game

Caleb Williams took a significant step toward a return Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, with the Chicago Bears quarterback set to participate fully in Wednesday’s walkthrough after a three-game absence caused by a hamstring injury.

What changed for the franchise

Head coach Ben Johnson said the Bears’ quarterback plan remains unsettled, but Williams’ involvement in the opening practice work is an encouraging development. Williams was hurt on a fourth-quarter scramble in Week 2 and was initially expected to be sidelined for three or four games.

Chicago has gone 2-1 without its starting quarterback. Tyson Bagent struggled in the Week 5 loss to the Green Bay Packers, while Case Keenum started the Week 3 game against the Philadelphia Eagles as Johnson sought to give his available starter a full week of preparation.

A walkthrough does not carry the same physical demands as a standard practice, and Thursday’s session should offer a stronger indication of whether Williams can start against Atlanta. Johnson has emphasized the importance of keeping the first-team offense together during the week, including the quarterback’s timing with the offensive line and pass catchers.

“It is still fluid,” Johnson said of the quarterback situation, adding that he is comfortable with the current plan.

Johnson also said the Bears must weigh both the immediate matchup and the larger schedule picture. Chicago is preparing for a short week following the Falcons game, with the New England Patriots awaiting on Thursday Night Football on Oct. 22.

Health remains the club’s foremost concern for its three quarterbacks, Johnson said, noting that none is necessarily fully healthy at this point in the season. The Bears will consider the quarterback’s command of the operation, protection communication and connection with receivers before making a final decision.
