Olise Red Card Costs Bayern as Viking Snatch Late Champions League Draw

Bayern Munich’s Champions League night in Stavanger ended with a 3-3 draw that felt like a defeat, after Michael Olise’s dismissal helped Viking Stavanger rescue a 90th-minute equaliser. Bayern had overturned a two-goal deficit to lead 3-2, only to spend more than 15 minutes with 10 men after the French winger lost his composure.

Olise will now miss Bayern’s next Champions League fixture against Arsenal, removing a major attacking option for one of the campaign’s most demanding assignments. The winger had already been booked when an exchange with Viking captain Zlatko Tripic ended with Olise throwing the ball at his opponent’s head, prompting a second yellow card.

Kompany demands better control

Vincent Kompany made clear that the incident was unacceptable, describing the dismissal as an enormous act of stupidity. The Bayern coach said the issue had been discussed plainly and that Olise had to show greater self-control.

Kompany was particularly frustrated by the timing, with Bayern holding a narrow advantage after their fightback. He expressed hope that the setback could become a lesson which leaves both player and team stronger.

Harry Kane also said Olise must accept the consequences of his action. The England forward said his team-mate was deeply upset, but insisted that he must learn from what happened.

Kane acknowledged that Olise would be devastated to miss such an important European match against Arsenal, adding that suspension is part of football when a player is sent off.

Possible internal punishment

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl did not rule out an internal fine for Olise. Asked whether the club would impose a financial sanction, Eberl said the matter would be addressed calmly.

The mood in Munich was shaped not only by the red card but by the points Bayern allowed to slip away. Having climbed from 2-0 behind to a 3-2 lead, they could not protect their position after Olise’s departure, with Viking finding the late equaliser.

Tripic claims the personal battle

Tripic was unapologetic after the final whistle, saying it was remarkable that a player he believes could one day win the Ballon d’Or had been provoked by “a guy from Oftebro and Lyngdal”.

The Viking winger said Olise should not have expected an easy evening in Stavanger. He added that once he had distracted the Bayern player from the qualities that make him exceptional, Olise lost his temper and threw the ball into his face. In Tripic’s view, that meant he had won their individual contest.
