Two Ligue 1 appearances, two goals, and Cameron Archer has already given Auxerre a cutting edge under the lights of the new season. The 24-year-old English forward, borrowed from Southampton on deadline day, will look to continue that start when AJA host Brest on Sunday at 15:00 in the fifth round.
The move
Archer joined Auxerre on 1 September on a season-long loan from Southampton, with no purchase option included. His arrival reunited him with Will Still, the Auxerre coach who had worked with the striker at Southampton between July and November 2025.
Still had quickly identified Archer as a player suited to his ideas. The coach described him as a genuine talent who had not consistently received the opportunities or confidence needed to establish himself at the highest level.
At the start of pre-season, Southampton had an oversized squad and decisions had to be made. Still felt Archer’s qualities matched the type of team he wants Auxerre to become. He also values the player’s personality, describing him as quiet and fairly reserved, someone who simply enjoys playing and scoring.
The shared English language has helped their communication. Still believes his messages reach Archer directly, while the forward’s versatility offers options: he can start wide or operate in a two-man attack. He demonstrated his finishing range in Southampton’s 3-0 League Cup win at Norwich on 26 August 2025, scoring with a right-footed player’s curling left-footed effort into the top corner.
The French season around it
Archer struck in Auxerre’s 3-1 defeat at Lyon on 4 September before scoring again in the 1-0 victory over Nice on 12 September. Defender Clément Akpa said the newcomer had rapidly won over the squad.
Still sees echoes of Folarin Balogun, whom he coached at Reims. Balogun scored in each of his first two Ligue 1 matches in August 2022 and went on to finish the campaign with 21 goals, despite arriving with limited recognition in France.
The Auxerre manager’s comparison rests on movement rather than reputation. He sees in Archer the ability to attack space close to goal and in behind defences, alongside the willingness to do defensive work for the side.
- Cameron Archer — Auxerre forward, on loan from Southampton
- Will Still — Auxerre coach and Archer’s former Southampton manager
- Folarin Balogun — Monaco striker, previously coached by Still at Reims
- Clément Akpa — Auxerre defender
Still believes Archer has the attributes to succeed in Ligue 1 if he is given the room and responsibility to do so. The coach’s message is clear: Auxerre can provide the platform, but the forward must now make the season his own.
A career still searching for its breakthrough
Born in Walsall, Archer entered Aston Villa’s academy at the age of eight and made his Premier League debut in September 2021. Loans at Preston North End from January to June 2022 and Middlesbrough from January to June 2023 gave him Championship experience.
Sheffield United paid €21.5 million for him in August 2023, but he struggled to make a decisive impact. Aston Villa brought him back in July 2024 before selling him five weeks later to Southampton for €17.6 million. Southampton were relegated a year later, and Archer remains tied to the club until 2028.
His record includes 74 Premier League matches and six goals, plus 70 Championship outings with 22 goals. At international level, he won the European Under-21 Championship with England in 2023, scoring six times in 11 appearances for the age-group side.
Auxerre now have an early-season scorer with a manager who knows precisely what he wants from him. Brest arrive on Sunday, and Archer’s fast start has given the home side a new focal point.
