Carlos Valderrama Shaves Iconic Blond Hair at 65

In Colombia’s Caribbean football heartland, Carlos Valderrama has brought a surprisingly personal chapter of the game’s visual history to a close. The former Colombia captain, whose flowing blond hair became as recognisable as his passing, has shaved his head at the age of 65.

A new look for Colombia’s “Pibe”

Valderrama shared the transformation on social media on Tuesday, showing his wife, Elvira Redondo, taking charge of the clippers. Before she began, she asked whether he was ready for the moment.

His answer captured the weight of a change after decades with one of South American football’s most famous appearances: “More or less.”

  • Valderrama’s long, curly blond hair had remained a defining feature throughout his playing career and retirement.
  • Elvira Redondo carried out the haircut.
  • The former midfielder posted the result himself after the shave.

A face of Colombia across three World Cups

Known widely as “El Pibe”, Valderrama was admired for his elegant distribution and imagination in midfield, while his distinctive hair ensured he was instantly recognisable far beyond Colombia.

His international career included three World Cup appearances with Colombia, at Italy 1990, the United States 1994 and France 1998. He also took part in five Copa América tournaments.

At club level, he represented leading Colombian sides including Deportivo Cali, Independiente Medellín and Junior de Barranquilla.

Higuita approves the transformation

René Higuita, Valderrama’s former Colombia teammate and another enduring figure from that generation, responded warmly in the comments beneath the post.

“Pibe, what is beautiful is beautiful. It looks great,” the ex-goalkeeper wrote, offering approval for a new image that marks the end of an unmistakable football silhouette.
