Barcelona’s autumn has begun with the sort of attacking abundance that turns European nights at the Olímpic into occasions of expectation. Against Galatasaray in the Champions League, Lamine Yamal did not find the net himself, yet Hansi Flick saw the teenager’s influence throughout a performance that again underlined his central place in the Catalan side.
The Barcelona number 10 was involved in a succession of moves that ended in goals against the Turkish visitors, offering the final ball or creating the space from which teammates could finish. Flick said Yamal had effectively supplied the decisive pass for “three or four” of the team’s goals, calling him an extraordinary player and an essential figure for the squad.
For the German coach, the value of the young Spanish forward cannot be reduced to his own scoring record. Yamal’s ability to unpick a defence, create chances and connect Barcelona’s attacking players has made him one of the side’s defining presences, even on a night when he left without a goal.
Barcelona’s star, but part of a larger ambition
Flick acknowledged that the attention around Yamal is understandable. “I understand why everybody watches Lamine, because he is our star,” he said. But he also stressed that Barcelona possess quality across the pitch, and that individual acclaim matters less than the collective outcome.
The coach said Yamal still surprises him at the training ground, where he regularly produces the kind of moments he then repeats under competitive pressure. That consistency, from practice to Champions League football, has been another reason for Flick’s satisfaction with the forward’s contribution.
Barcelona have scored 43 goals across their opening 10 matches of the season, a striking return that reflects their current attacking form. Flick said the club, its supporters and the players could take pride in the confidence generated by that run, while cautioning that football’s momentum can change quickly.
There was no temptation, from the Barcelona bench, to treat early-season goals as an achievement in themselves. Flick made clear that the real measure of the campaign will come much later, when trophies are decided in May and June. Barcelona, he said, are working every day with those honours in mind.
