Chivu Embraces Squad Rotation as Inter Target Serie A and Europe

Inter’s season is already being shaped by a simple decision: Cristiano Chivu does not intend to rely on one fixed XI. With a deeper squad than last year’s, the Nerazzurri coach is spreading responsibility early, keeping players involved and protecting the side’s energy for a campaign in which domestic authority and European progress are both expected.

The decision

Rotation is not being treated as an emergency measure at Inter. It is part of Chivu’s plan, built around a group with greater depth in both numbers and quality than the one available last season. The task is to limit the frustrations that naturally arise among players who want regular football, while ensuring the team does not arrive at the decisive months short of freshness.

As reigning champions, Inter have not hidden their Scudetto ambitions. They are widely regarded as the leading contenders to retain the title, while the aim in the Champions League is to travel as far as possible. Managing workloads is therefore central to the club’s calendar rather than an optional adjustment.

Chivu has made that point through his selections. In the opening run of matches, Inter have made at least three changes each time, with the number rising as the schedule tightened. The gap between Napoli and Real Madrid was only three days, although there was more recovery time around the other fixtures.

Against Cagliari, compared with the Monza match, Benjamin Pavard, Luis Henrique and Petar Sucic came into the side. The Napoli game brought Yann Bisseck, Andy Diouf and Piotr Zielinski into the team. For the quick trip to the Bernabeu, Pavard returned alongside Carlos Augusto, Jones and Marcus Thuram.

The Udinese fixture saw even broader turnover, with John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zielinski and Francesco Esposito selected. Josep Martinez remained in goal after his error in Madrid, a circumstance that prevented Provedel from taking his place against the Friulani.

Apart from Martinez, only Nicolò Barella and Alessandro Bastoni have started every match so far. Lautaro Martinez was given a full 90 minutes of rest against Udinese last Saturday. Bonny and Stankovic are the only Inter players yet to start a game, although both are expected to receive opportunities in time.

Bonny has strengthened his case with his contributions from the bench, including a goal against Udinese. Thuram had done the same against Napoli. Stankovic’s wait is more easily explained by the congestion in midfield, where Chivu has several established options to manage.

Roma and the next changes

More alterations are expected when Inter travel to Roma on Saturday. Lautaro Martinez and Federico Dimarco are set to return, while Bisseck is also due back in defence, where his pace is considered useful for the occasion.

In midfield, Jones is currently favoured to replace Mkhitaryan, with Sucic also in contention. On the right flank, Chivu must choose between Diouf and Luis Henrique. Selecting Diouf would mean a fourth successive appearance for him; choosing the Brazilian would take the number of changes from the Udinese line-up back to five.

For Inter, this is not a signal of uncertainty. It is the consequence of a coach attempting to use two competitive teams across a long season, with league afternoons and European nights both carrying weight.
