Chivu’s Inter Rotation Pays Off Against Parma but Faces Champions League Test

Inter’s latest league win over Parma offered a clear view of Cristian Chivu’s management: there are no fixed starters, no defined reserves, only a squad expected to compete for places every week.

The Nerazzurri settled the Parma match inside half an hour despite leaving Akanji, Bastoni, Barella, Zielinski and Lautaro Martinez on the bench. Lautaro was the only one of that group used, coming on for the final 30 minutes.

That early control allowed Chivu to protect players returning from international duty and turn attention quickly towards Club Brugge at San Siro. The Champions League fixture carries considerable weight after Inter’s run of three straight defeats and only one victory from their last seven European matches.

Quick facts

  • Inter have used 22 players in the league so far.
  • Ten different players have scored, including Carlos Augusto, Bisseck and the Thuram-Lautaro partnership.
  • Barella has played 510 minutes, Diouf 508 and Bastoni 482; only Josep Martinez has featured more consistently.
  • Provedel and Di Gennaro are the only players yet to make an appearance.
  • Stankovic played the final half-hour against Parma, while Spence returned from injury in that match.

Chivu had already set out his view before the Brugge game, preferring to describe a group seeking constant improvement and greater competitiveness, including on the training pitch. The message is being reflected in selection: Inter have enough depth to alter the side without treating changes as a downgrade.

Zielinski had played all four of Poland’s international fixtures, while Akanji had done the same for Switzerland. Lautaro returned from Argentina after another long journey of around 10,000 kilometres, having started each of the three friendlies, including Messi’s farewell match.

Bastoni and Barella each made three appearances from four for Italy. Bastoni also scored twice during that spell. All five players rested at the start against Parma are expected to return from the opening whistle against Brugge.

Inter’s European target is a top-eight finish that would avoid the play-off round. The club cannot afford another situation in which continental commitments are allowed to slip while the league becomes the sole priority, as happened in the Bodø setback.

Rotation has instead supported Inter’s domestic campaign, helped by a deeper squad than in recent seasons. Chivu has spread responsibility across the side, with Carlos Augusto, Bisseck and the forward pairing all contributing goals.

There is still room for the goalkeeper group to move. Josep Martinez has been used throughout, while former Lazio man Provedel is expected to receive his opportunity soon, leaving Di Gennaro as the other unused goalkeeper.

For now, Barella, Diouf and Bastoni lead the outfield workload figures, and their minutes will continue to rise. But Chivu’s broader point remains central to Inter’s season: the squad, rather than an established first XI, is meant to carry the campaign through league Sundays and European nights alike.
