Benfica’s night at Porto turned sharply after 35 minutes, when France international Clément Lenglet was sent off in the heavyweight Portuguese clash. The defender’s dismissal left the Lisbon side with a long spell to play a man down despite a promising start away from home.
Lenglet sees red in Porto
The 31-year-old centre-back received two yellow cards in the opening 35 minutes at the home of FC Porto.
- Lenglet was first booked in the 26th minute after arriving late in a challenge on Victor Froholdt.
- He was then shown a second yellow card nine minutes later following an off-the-ball reaction involving André Silva.
- Silva made the most of the incident, and the referee dismissed Lenglet.
Early blow for Benfica’s French defender
Lenglet had joined Benfica on loan from Atlético de Madrid during the summer and was making his mark in one of the season’s major domestic fixtures. Instead, his afternoon ended early as Benfica were reduced to 10 players in Porto.
The former France international has earned 16 caps for Les Bleus. His sending-off came after Benfica had made a positive opening to the contest, before discipline altered the shape of the match.
