Club Brugge Stun Inter in Seven-Goal Champions League Thriller

Inter’s Champions League campaign has opened with two defeats, and the second was especially damaging: Club Brugge arrived in Milan and left having exposed the Italian champions in a night of relentless attacking football.

Brugge turn Milan into an open contest

  1. Inter were beaten at home by an impressive Brugge side in a match that bore little resemblance to the defensive tradition usually associated with Italian football.
  2. The two teams produced more than 45 attempts between them, with the contest repeatedly opening up at both ends.
  3. Yann Sommer, facing the club he represented until the summer, made important saves as Brugge pressed their advantage.
  4. Nicolò Tresoldi, the Sardinia-born forward, scored a hat-trick to decide the evening and sink the reigning Serie A champions.

For Inter, the result extends a bleak start on the continental stage. Two fixtures have brought two losses, leaving a side that came into the season as Italy’s champions searching for control as their European campaign begins to unravel.

Brugge, meanwhile, produced the kind of away performance that can alter the mood of a league-phase run: bold in possession, clinical in the decisive moments and undeterred by the setting. Tresoldi’s three goals ensured that their trip to Milan became one of the early standout nights of the competition.
