Viking Hold Bayern, Club Brugge Rout Inter in Champions League

Europe’s club game returned with a restless second matchday, from Stavanger to Milan, as Viking held Bayern Munich in Norway and Club Brugge struck four times to defeat Inter at San Siro. Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Villarreal ensured Spain supplied three winners across the round, while Sabah marked their long-awaited return to the competition with a landmark victory.

Key takeaways

  • Club Brugge won 4-3 away to Inter in one of the night’s highest-scoring contests.
  • Viking and Bayern Munich shared six goals in a 3-3 draw after the German side had recovered from a two-goal deficit.
  • Barcelona lead the standings on six points, ahead of Sporting CP and Arsenal on the same total.
  • Sabah beat Slavia Prague 2-0, their first win after opening their campaign with a heavy loss to Manchester United.
  • Atlético Madrid overcame Manchester United 2-0 at the Metropolitano.

A matchday of reversals from Norway to the Mediterranean

The early fixtures set a cross-border tone. Sporting CP travelled to Lens and came away with a 2-0 win, while Azerbaijan’s Sabah responded strongly to their opening setback by overcoming Slavia Prague 2-0.

In Istanbul, Barcelona turned around their match against Galatasaray to claim a 4-1 victory. Lamine Yamal again supplied a conspicuous display of individual quality as the Spanish side moved through the evening with maximum points intact.

Atlético were more measured but equally convincing in Madrid. They beat Manchester United 2-0, with Álex Baena prominent in the home performance and two different scorers deciding the contest at the Metropolitano.

The most unusual journey of the round took Bayern to Norway, where Viking raced into a 2-0 lead. Bayern fought back to move 3-2 ahead, only for the hosts to level and secure a 3-3 result that cost the visitors their perfect start.

Inter’s evening proved even more damaging. Brugge left Milan with a 4-3 win in an open, eventful encounter, while Arsenal delivered a more controlled result by beating Lille 3-0.

Elsewhere, RB Leipzig edged PSV Eindhoven by a single goal. Villarreal recovered from behind to beat Napoli 3-1 at La Cerámica, completing a productive night for Spanish clubs.

Barcelona set the early pace

Barcelona stand first after two rounds with six points from six. Sporting CP have matched that tally, while Arsenal are third and remain the only other side yet to drop a point after two matches.

Bayern’s draw in Norway leaves them fourth on four points. PSG sit fifth despite not yet playing in this round, followed by Como, who are also still to take the field. Manchester United are seventh, with Stuttgart completing the provisional top eight — the positions that would bring direct progression without a play-off.

At the other end, Bodø/Glimt remain bottom before their match against Borussia Dortmund. Slovan Bratislava are next from the foot of the table, while Galatasaray are among the teams to have played twice without taking a point. Napoli and Slavia Prague, placed 30th and 31st respectively, also face an early climb after difficult results.
