Nottingham’s City Ground offered Coventry City a small but significant change of weather on Sunday: after four difficult Premier League outings without either a point or a goal, the promoted side found the resilience required to leave with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
Frank Lampard’s team had arrived at the bottom of the table after defeats to Arsenal, Hull, Manchester City and Brighton, a bruising opening sequence for a club back in the top division for the first time since 2000-01. Forest, meanwhile, had gone three matches unbeaten and began the afternoon in a much steadier position.
The decisive moment came 10 minutes after the interval. Carla Rushworth’s pass released Jay Dasilva, who drove forward quickly before striking firmly beyond Matz Sels. It was Coventry’s first goal of the campaign, and it gave the visitors a lead to protect rather than another deficit to chase.
A first foothold in the season
From Dasilva’s finish onward, Coventry concentrated on defending their advantage. The contest became an exercise in survival, with Lampard’s side holding their shape through Forest pressure and waiting for the final whistle that had felt remote during their scoreless first four rounds.
Forest thought they had salvaged a point late on when Igor Jesus found the net in the 87th minute, but the effort was ruled out for a foul in the build-up. The hosts were left empty-handed and slipped to 12th place.
For Coventry, the result lifts them to 18th, level on points with Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, the two sides immediately above the relegation places. Tottenham and Fulham are now the only Premier League clubs still waiting for a first victory, while Coventry can carry a first measure of belief home from the East Midlands.
