Portugal’s camp has been unsettled by Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure on Wednesday, with the country’s most prominent football figure leaving the squad after a dispute with national-team coach Jorge Jesus.
The rupture follows an extraordinary moment in Ronaldo’s international career: for the first time in 18 years with Portugal, he spent an entire 90-minute match on the bench. Ronaldo’s sister, Elma Aveiro, responded publicly as the row reached beyond the pitch. In a social-media post, she argued that her brother had not received the treatment he deserved and criticised the environment around the national side.
“CR7 deserved more respect,” she wrote. “The national team deserved better organisation, while Portuguese journalism needed more professionalism and less speculation.”
Aveiro then turned her frustration towards the wider reaction in Portugal, accusing the public of envy and disrespect. She said the country did not deserve “to have the best in anything”, adding that Portugal risked returning to the footballing mediocrity she believes preceded Ronaldo’s rise.
The episode places Portugal’s most enduring modern international at the centre of another tense chapter with the national setup, with the immediate consequences of his departure from Jorge Jesus’s camp still to emerge.
