Lionel Messi’s international story ended on Tuesday night with Argentina’s 3-0 win over Benin, and Cristiano Ronaldo was among the figures paying tribute to a rival whose name has defined an era.
The move
Messi brought his Argentina career to a close after the victory over Benin, ending his time as captain of the Albiceleste.
The Argentine then extended his farewell on Instagram, posting a message reflecting on his years with the national team. Football’s biggest names responded in the comments, including Ronaldo.
Ronaldo’s message to Messi
The Portugal forward offered a restrained but warm salute to his long-time competitor.
“Leo, you gave so many years to your country and built a story that will remain in people’s memories forever,” Ronaldo wrote. “You have all my respect for what you achieved with Argentina. A hug.”
The message came while Ronaldo’s own future with Portugal remains a subject of discussion, placing his tribute to Messi’s departure from international football in a particularly notable moment for both players.
