Their 2026 reunion began quickly. After Erin Routliffe, Dabrowski’s title-winning partner at the 2024 WTA Finals, chose to team with close friend Asia Muhammad for 2026, Dabrowski contacted Stefani first. Stefani accepted, and they reached the Australian Open semifinals in their opening event back together.
Eight months on, the partnership has produced its strongest stretch yet. Along with three trophies, they made the Wimbledon final, where Hanyu Guo and Kristina Mladenovic stopped them in the title match. Dabrowski and Stefani also arrive from a US Open semifinal run.
Stefani said their immediate comfort on court was natural, but stressed that their latest version is not simply a repeat of their earlier partnership. Both players have changed through experience, she said, and their current success has come from combining their games, tactical discussions and individual work.
“A lot developed naturally, but we have also worked hard separately and as a team to make this partnership succeed,” Stefani said.
Their road back to the Finals has carried a long interruption. They first joined forces in August 2021 and clicked immediately, reaching the San Jose final in their debut tournament before winning the National Bank Open in Montreal. A Cincinnati WTA 1000 semifinal followed, then four victories at the US Open.
That New York run ended painfully in the semifinals against Coco Gauff and Caty McNally. With Dabrowski and Stefani ahead 2-0 in the first-set tiebreak, Stefani suffered a torn ACL after falling during a point. She left the court in a wheelchair after initially trying to walk away.
Although they had qualified for the 2021 WTA Finals in Guadalajara, the injury prevented them from playing. Dabrowski’s only absence from the Finals since 2017 came despite earning a place in the field.
Stefani returned in 2022 and immediately won the Chennai Open alongside Dabrowski, with the pair taking all eight sets they played. They contested six tournaments together in 2023 but could not move beyond the quarterfinals, finishing that season with a 7-6 record.
Now, their renewed consistency has placed them among the elite doubles teams again. Stefani said early qualification reflected both their level and their ability to keep solving problems through the season.
“It is rewarding because it shows we have been consistent and that our standard is where it needs to be,” Stefani said. “We set this as a goal at the start of the year, and it has not all been easy. I’m happy we came back together and are enjoying this run.”
Dabrowski won the WTA Finals with Routliffe in 2024 and will return to the event with particular familiarity. For the 34-year-old, qualifying is a central objective every season, not only for the chance to face the leading teams but for the small-field atmosphere around the year-end event.
Indian Wells adds another appeal. Dabrowski said the California setting should make it easier for friends to attend, while Stefani, who played college tennis at Pepperdine University near Malibu, welcomed another opportunity to return to the state.
Stefani said she enjoys the Indian Wells conditions and the local support for doubles, while Dabrowski described the Finals as the culmination of the full season. Before the desert finale, the team is due in Sao Paulo for the SP Open.
