In the southern edge of Madrid, where the Coliseum rarely deals in footballing grandeur, Getafe have secured one of the most decorated Spanish defenders of his generation. Dani Carvajal, 34, has agreed to join José Bordalás’ side after the end of his long Real Madrid career, remaining close to home while taking on a markedly different challenge.
A Madrid career takes a new direction
- Carvajal became a free agent on 30 June, when his spell at Real Madrid came to an end.
- Getafe moved for the Leganés-born defender as Bordalás sought another option on the right side of his team.
- The player accepted the proposal and will play for the Azulones this season, ending a move that once appeared highly improbable for the club.
The former Madrid captain arrives with an exceptional record: 27 trophies in 451 appearances for the Bernabéu club. His haul includes six Champions League titles, four Spanish league crowns and two Copa del Rey victories.
His international honours add further weight to the signing. Carvajal was part of Spain’s Euro 2024-winning squad and also lifted the Nations League in 2023.
A major salary sacrifice
Staying in the Madrid area and continuing his playing career have been central to the decision. Carvajal is understood to have accepted a reduction of up to 90 per cent on the almost €10 million net annual salary he earned at Real Madrid.
His Getafe deal is expected to be worth around €1 million, still a significant wage but vastly below his previous income. Bordalás’ personal approach was also decisive in convincing the defender to choose the Coliseum project.
Where Carvajal fits at Getafe
Carvajal will compete with Kiko Femenía for the right-back role, though his arrival offers Bordalás broader possibilities. Should Getafe use three central defenders, he could operate on the right of that back line, potentially allowing Andrés García to take up a more advanced position.
The immediate question is not his pedigree but his remaining capacity to perform week after week. Getafe are acquiring a player accustomed to decisive European nights and title races, while Carvajal enters a side built on resilience and demanding work rather than the comforts of Madrid’s elite.
League availability before Europe
Getafe begin their Conference League campaign this Thursday, but Carvajal cannot be registered for that competition at this stage. He would only become eligible from February, provided the club remain involved in Europe.
He can, however, be available in LaLiga from next weekend. For a club heading into continental football with a seasoned winner in its dressing room, the signing brings experience, authority and an unusual connection to the very top of the European game.
