Dani Güiza’s decisive contribution came far from the Champions League stage but carried the weight of a deeply personal European football weekend: the 46-year-old scored as Trebujena CF recovered to beat CD El Torno 2-1 away from home in Spain’s seventh tier.
What the night decided
Trebujena were trailing 1-0 when Güiza intervened in the 68th minute. The former Spain striker found space to head in a cross, drawing his side level and setting up the comeback that ended with a 2-1 victory.
It was his first goal since joining Trebujena in June, and it was followed by an emotional celebration. Güiza pointed towards the sky in tribute to his parents, both of whom died in recent months.
He later explained the significance of the goal in a message to them: “Mum, Dad, this goal is for you. Thank you for taking such good care of me. I love you both madly and I will never forget you. I love you.”
A goal for his parents
2026 has brought difficult personal losses for Güiza. His mother, Pepi Güiza, died in March aged 69. His father, Gabriel González, was admitted to hospital in August and Güiza confirmed his death in mid-September.
Sunday’s equaliser therefore meant more than a turning point in a regional-league match. Güiza’s experience and positioning helped Trebujena overturn the deficit, while his celebration turned the moment into a public farewell to the two people he described as the most important in his life.
After leaving professional football, Güiza has continued playing in Primera Andaluza. At 46, he remains a scorer — and, against CD El Torno, his header changed both the match and the mood of Trebujena’s week.
