Daniel Osvaldo, the former Roma, Juventus, Inter and Italy forward, is in intensive care in Argentina after undergoing surgery for a serious pleural effusion affecting his right lung.

The 40-year-old was admitted to hospital in Llavallol, in the Buenos Aires province, after his sister found him in very poor health and took him for medical treatment.

A familiar figure in Serie A
Osvaldo’s career brought him through several leading Italian clubs, most notably Roma, Juventus and Inter. He also represented Italy at international level after establishing himself in Serie A.
His spell at Roma was the defining chapter of his Italian career, while later moves to Juventus and Inter placed him within title-chasing squads during a changing period for the league. His career also took him beyond Italy before he stepped away from professional football.
Life after retirement and a public battle
After leaving the game, Osvaldo turned his attention to music. More recently, he had returned to football as a television commentator.
In recent years, however, he had also spoken openly about personal difficulties, including addiction. Two years ago, he released a video in which he said that he was living with depression and receiving psychiatric treatment.
His hospitalisation now brings renewed concern for a former Serie A forward whose post-football life has been marked by a willingness to discuss struggles that are often kept out of public view.
